Matrescence
Noun: The process of becoming a mother
I am passionate about maternal mental health and supporting mamas.
Matrescence, coined by Dana Raphael (1973), is a term to describe the psychological, emotional, and identity changes that women experience as they transition into motherhood. The process of becoming a mother is a hugely significant developmental passage in a woman’s life. Similar to adolescence, matrescence involves a period of significant growth, self-discovery, and adaptation to new roles and responsibilities.
.As a therapist, I offer a safe and nonjudgmental space for clients to explore their emotions, concerns, and experiences during this transformative time. Together, we'll work to address any struggles you may be facing, develop coping strategies, and cultivate self-compassion as you navigate the complexities of motherhood. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or simply seeking guidance, I'm here to support you on your matrescence journey.
I can help you with:
Postpartum Depression: Postpartum depression affects about 1 in 5 new mothers and can show up as sadness, numbness, rage, disconnection from your baby, or the terrifying feeling that something is very wrong. These feelings are not your fault and they are treatable.
Postpartum Anxiety: Racing thoughts, hypervigilance, intrusive fears, inability to rest, constant dread — postpartum anxiety is actually the most common perinatal mood disorder and responds beautifully to therapy. If your mind won't quiet down, I can help.
Birth Trauma If your birth experience felt frightening, out of control, or left you with memories you can't shake, you may be carrying birth trauma. I am trained in birth story processing and EMDR and can help you heal from what happened.
Perinatal OCD Intrusive thoughts about harming your baby are far more common than most moms know — and having them does not mean you are dangerous. Perinatal OCD is treatable, and I provide specialized, nonjudgmental support.
Matrescence & Identity Even when things look fine from the outside, losing your former self in motherhood is real and painful. This isn't ingratitude — it's matrescence, and it deserves real therapeutic support.
Parental Leave & Return to Work As a Certified RETAIN Parental Leave Coach, I support moms through the emotionally complex transition of returning to work — a season that is often overlooked and underserved.
The old adage rings true, it takes a village to raise a child. Let me be part of your village.
“Matrescence is the transition a woman undergoes when she becomes a mother. It’s a radical identity shift, a transformation like no other, and nothing less than the beginning of a new life.”
